3D Printing Basics: 3D Printing Process

🚀 Everyday 3D Printing

Simple, Easy & No Stress! 🎯

Before we dive into materials, printers, and technical settings, let’s take a step back! You don’t need to be a NASA engineer to use a 3D printer.

In fact, the process is much simpler than you think. Sounds complicated? Even a 9-year-old can do it—as long as they follow the right steps!

Don’t worry! You don’t need to learn 1,000 technical terms just to print something. Think of it like a paper printer – but for objects!

📂 Choosing a File for Printing

Everything starts with the file.

This is like a recipe that tells your printer what to make. It includes:

🔹 The shape and size of the object.
🔹 Whether supports are needed (so it doesn’t look like melted ice cream).
🔹 The right printing temperature (don’t worry, the printer figures this out).

📥 Where Do We Find Files?

If you’re a beginner, the easiest way is to download ready-made files from online libraries. We’ll cover where to find them later.

If you want more control, you can design your own 3D file or even hire a professional to do it for you.

🧹 Keep Your Printer Clean!

Before you start printing, take a quick look at your printer:

📌 Is there dust?
📌 Are there leftover plastic pieces from a previous print?
📌 Did your cat decide it’s her new toy?

A clean printer means better prints and fewer problems.

🤦‍♂️ A Quick Story…

A student once called me in a panic because his printer wasn’t working—it kept giving him an error message.

After 12 seconds of checking, I found the problem:
👉 A tiny piece of plastic was blocking the print head from moving properly.

Once we removed it, everything worked perfectly. The best part? We ended up having a great night drinking tsipouro! 🥃

🔌 Turn On the Printer (Yes, Really!)

📢 "Did you check if it’s turned on?"

Sounds silly, but this is the number one mistake people make!

📌 The printer must be on and connected to Wi-Fi.
📌 If it’s not working, turn it off and back on.
📌 This magically fixes most issues! ✨

🎨 Choosing & Loading the Filament

This is the "ink" of your 3D printer.

📌 If you want a red object, use red filament (don’t ask why it came out black).
📌 If you need something flexible, choose the right material (don’t complain if it turns out rock-hard!).

Loading filament takes about 3 minutes—as easy as threading a sewing machine, except this sewing machine is smarter!

🧽 Clean the Print Bed (SUPER IMPORTANT!)

📌 Always clean the print bed with alcohol before printing!

Even if it looks clean, your fingerprints leave oils that can ruin your print.

Pro Tip:

🚫 If you don’t clean the bed, your print might detach in the middle of printing, and you’ll end up with a mess of plastic spaghetti. 🍝

📱 Printing from Your Phone – Yes, It’s THAT Easy!

Find the file.
Tap "Send to Printer."
The printer starts by itself!

Modern 3D printers work almost like paper printers. In the past, you needed 280 different settings to print something. Now, you just press a button!

💻 Printing from a Computer – Why Not?

Open your printer software.
Load the file and "slice" it (turn it into printable layers).
Send the file to the printer.

If you feel advanced, you can tweak many settings here.
But don’t worry—we’ll cover that later!

⏳ Monitor Your Print

Your printer doesn’t have eyes 👀 and won’t know if something goes wrong.

📌 If your cat knocks over the object, the printer won’t stop it.
📌 If your child touches the hot nozzle, the printer won’t warn them.

So?
📌 Check the print every now and then to make sure everything is going well.

❄️ Wait for the Print to Cool Before Removing It

Be patient!
Wait 10-15 minutes before removing the object.
If you remove it too soon, you could damage both the object and the printer.

I know, you’re excited to grab your first 3D print!
But hold onit’s like baking cookies. If you take them out too soon, they fall apart! 🍪

🔋 Bonus Tip: Plug Your Printer into a UPS!

🚨 If the power goes out, your print is ruined!
📌 With a UPS, you can keep your printer running for a few minutes and save your print.

🎉 Congratulations! You’re Now a 3D Printing User!

3D printing isn’t hard—it just takes a little practice.
And now… let’s print something cool! 🚀
