How is the cost of a 3D print determined?

The cost of a 3D print is based on the printing time, risk management, and the preparation and completion requirements of the production process. Below, we explain in detail how the pricing is calculated and why it is set at the specified rate.

1. Printing Time

  • The duration of the print directly affects the cost.
    • Prints can take anywhere from a few hours to several days.
  • The printing cost is €5 per hour.
    • Student Discount: 15% for all students.

2. Risk Management

Printing always involves a degree of risk, which we take on entirely.

What is risk management?

  • Failures during printing:
    • The part may detach from the print bed.
    • Power outages or machine malfunctions may occur.
    • Preparation errors can cause overhangs or supports to fail.
  • Failures after printing:
    • During support removal or post-processing, delicate parts may break or become deformed.
    • In such cases, we take responsibility for reprinting the part.

3. File Preparation

  • Preparing the file for printing requires time, expertise, and precision.
    • Proper placement of parts for optimal printing.
    • Adjustments and testing before production begins.
  • Our expertise comes from years of investment in knowledge and hands-on experience to ensure excellent results.

4. Continuous Monitoring and Management

  • During printing, an operator continuously monitors the process to ensure everything runs smoothly.
  • This requires time and constant vigilance, especially for long-duration prints.

5. Post-Processing and Packaging

  • After printing, the part is cleaned, supports are removed, and finishing touches are applied.
  • For delicate or artistic prints, special packaging may be required to ensure safe transportation.

6. Why Is the Cost What It Is?

The amount you pay covers:

  • Electricity: Power consumption of the machine during printing.
  • Printing Materials: Quality and quantity of the material used.
  • Labor: Wages for staff who supervise, prepare, and complete the print.
  • Facility Costs: Rent, cleaning, and maintenance of the workspace and equipment.
  • Risk Management: Taking on responsibility for potential failures and reprints.

💡 Printing is only a small part of the overall process. The cost reflects the expertise, care, and quality we provide to deliver the best possible result. 😊

How Much Will a Part Cost? 💰

The cost of creating a part depends on the printing time and risk management. Below, we explain how to estimate the cost of your item.

Cost Calculation

  1. Printing Time:

    • Many popular websites, such as Makerworld, Printables, and MyMiniFactory, provide the estimated printing time for each model.
    • Simply multiply the estimated time by the hourly printing cost of the workshop (e.g., €5/hour) to calculate an indicative price.
  2. Adjustments to the Part:

    • If you want to change the size, dimensions, or other properties, the cost may increase or decrease accordingly.
  3. Risk Management:

    • For complex parts or designs that are prone to failure, the risk management cost may increase to ensure you receive a high-quality result.

Minimum Order

  • The minimum order cost at our workshop is €15.
    • This means that regardless of the print duration (5 minutes or 3 hours), the minimum charge will be €15.
    • To maximize value, consider ordering enough parts to fill a print bed for at least 3 hours of printing.

Why Is This Important?

In the Advance Mods section, we will ask you to provide an estimated budget for your order. By reviewing the above information, you’ll be better prepared to estimate your costs.

💡 Plan ahead, calculate your order, and ensure the best possible print! 😊

Why is the description important?

The description of your part is essential for us to understand exactly what you want to print. Whether it’s decorative, functional, practical, or a replacement part, your description will guide us in choosing the right printing method. Details here matter because they affect the print’s duration, material usage, and durability.

What to include in the description:

  • The type of item:
    • Is it decorative, structural, practical, or a replacement part?
  • The purpose of use:
    • Where will it be used, and what should it withstand?

How your description affects the print:

  • Decorative items:
    • We can save time and material by making them hollow.
  • Functional parts:
    • If the part needs to bear weight or fit into a mechanical setup, it must be solid on the inside for increased durability.

Examples:

  • ✔️ Decorative: “I want a decorative lamp for my living room.”
  • ✔️ Practical: “I need a stand for my phone.”
  • ✔️ Replacement: “It’s a part for a coffee machine; it must withstand heat.”
  • ✔️ Structural: “A support piece that will hold shelves.”
  • ❌ Incorrect answer: “It’s something small; you’ll figure it out.”

📝 Providing an accurate description helps us tailor the print to your exact needs! 😊

What is your color preference?

Choosing the right color is important for both the aesthetics and functionality of your part. Let us know how many colors you need, whether the part will be monochrome or multicolored, and how you want the colors to be applied if there’s more than one.

What to Know About Colors:

  1. Black and dark-colored parts:

    • Dark-colored materials, like black, tend to absorb sunlight and overheat. This can cause deformation if the part is used outdoors.
  2. Color limitations:

    • Special materials like ASA or carbon-reinforced filaments are available in limited basic color options.
  3. Production and quantity:

    • For small orders (e.g., 1 part), the available colors are limited to what we already have.
    • For larger orders, we can procure custom-colored materials specifically for your production.

What to Tell Us:

  • Whether you need one color or multiple.
  • If the color matters for functionality or the environment where the part will be used.
  • If you don’t have a specific preference, write “No preference – you choose.”

Examples:

  • ✔️ “I want the part to be monochrome in white.”
  • ✔️ “I need two colors: red for the outer part and black for the details.”
  • ✔️ “No preference, choose something suitable.”
  • ❌ Incorrect response: “Just make it look nice!”

🎨 Providing clear color preferences ensures that your part meets both your aesthetic and functional needs! 😊

What characteristics should the material have?

Choosing the right material is essential for the success of your print. Describe your material requirements, such as whether it needs to be rigid, flexible, or have specific resistances (e.g., chemical resistance). If you’re unsure about the best material, we can guide you!

What to Know About Materials:

  • Rigidity or Flexibility:

    • A rigid and hard material can be durable but is often brittle and may break under stress.
    • A flexible material can absorb forces by managing deformation as elastic absorption.
  • Environmental Resistance:

    • If you need resistance to gasoline, alcohol, or other chemicals, let us know.
    • Specify if the part will be used outdoors or in high-temperature environments.

What to Tell Us:

  • The primary requirements for the material (e.g., “flexible, chemically resistant”).
  • If you’re unsure or have no specific requirements, write “I’m not sure – please recommend.”

Examples:

  • ✔️ “I need the material to be rigid and resistant to gasoline.”
  • ✔️ “I need a flexible material that can handle stress.”
  • ✔️ “I don’t have specific requirements; you choose the best option.”
  • ❌ Incorrect response: “Just make it strong!”

🧱 Selecting the right material ensures the strength and functionality of your part! 😊

What do you need to do?

To print your part correctly, we need to know its exact dimensions. If you’re unsure about the size or want us to adjust it based on your budget, you can give us an estimate. We’re here to help! 😊

How to describe the size:

  • Provide dimensions in millimeters or centimeters.
    • Length: …
    • Width: …
    • Height: …
  • If you don’t know the exact dimensions:
    • Provide an estimate (e.g., “Around 10x10x15 cm”).
    • Let us know if you’d like us to adjust the size to fit your budget.

Important Note:

The maximum dimensions we can print are:
25 x 25 x 25 centimeters.

If your design is larger, we can discuss solutions such as splitting it into pieces for assembly after printing.

Examples:

  • ✔️ Exact dimensions: “10x15x20 cm”
  • ✔️ Estimate: “About 12x12x10 cm, but I’m flexible if needed.”
  • ❌ Incorrect answer: “I don’t know, just make it fit!”

📏 Help us create something perfect by giving us the dimensions you need! 😊

What do you need to do?

Weight is crucial for cases where your object needs to be heavier than a standard print, such as bases or items that require extra stability. Let us know if you have specific weight requirements so we can adjust accordingly. If weight doesn’t matter to you, simply write “OK”. 😊

How can we adjust the weight?

  • Adding weight inside the print:
    • We can fill the object with materials like sand.
    • The print will be paused midway to allow us to add the material.
  • Leaving the print empty or solid:
    • We can adjust the infill percentage based on your needs.

What to write:

  • The estimated weight you want (e.g., “500g” or “Heavier for stability”).
  • If you don’t care about the weight, write “OK”, and we’ll use default settings.

Examples:

  • ✔️ Specific preference: “It should weigh around 1kg.”
  • ✔️ General guidance: “As heavy as needed for stability.”
  • ✔️ No preference: “OK”
  • ❌ Incorrect answer: “I don’t know, do whatever!”

⚖️ Providing the right information about the weight helps us deliver the best possible result! 😊

Why do we need to know the quantity?

The number of items you want us to print is essential for properly organizing the production process.
Managing a single print is entirely different from handling multiple items, as it impacts planning, time, and costs.

What you should know:

  • Bulk printing:

    • When printing multiple items, we can organize the pieces on the print bed to save time and materials.
    • We use 3D Printing Optimization to reduce overall print time, which might require adjustments to your original design.
  • Single print:

    • For a single item, the process is more straightforward, but it won’t benefit from the time-saving adjustments used in bulk printing.

What to tell us:

  • The exact number of items you want us to print (e.g., 1, 10, 100).
  • If you’re unsure or need assistance, write “10”, and we’ll guide you based on your needs.

Examples:

  • ✔️ Exact answer: “I need 5 pieces.”
  • ✔️ Flexible approach: “I need 20, but if you can reduce the print time, I’m open to adjustments.”
  • ❌ Incorrect answer: “As many as you think!”

📦 Providing accurate information about the quantity helps us plan and optimize your production efficiently! 😊

Why is it important to provide a budget?

Your estimated budget helps us determine if the print you’re requesting is realistic for your needs. A clear answer allows us to adjust the size, complexity, or materials to fit your budget.

What to Know About Costs:

  1. The relationship between size and volume:

    • Doubling the size of an object increases its volume eightfold.
    • Halving the size significantly reduces the volume.
    • This means the cost doesn’t change linearly but increases or decreases exponentially.
  2. Adjusting to your budget:

    • If you provide a budget (e.g., €15), we can adjust the size or complexity to match the cost.
  3. The importance of a reasonable answer:

    • If your budget is unrealistically low, it might not be worth continuing the discussion. Think carefully before answering, as your response in this field could determine whether we proceed.

What to Tell Us:

  • The amount you’re willing to invest in the print.
  • If you’re unsure, write “I need a cost estimate.”

Examples:

  • ✔️ “I’m budgeting €30 for the print.”
  • ✔️ “I’d like to keep the cost under €20, if possible.”
  • ✔️ “I need a cost estimate.”
  • ❌ Incorrect response: “As cheap as possible.”

📺 To better understand costs, check out the videos below where we explain the cost of similar parts.

💰 Providing a clear budget helps us create a part that meets your needs and fits within your expectations! 😊

Why is it important to know your timeline?

The time required to complete an order depends on various factors, such as the complexity of the design, the quantity of parts, and any additional processing. A realistic timeline helps us organize production effectively and avoid unnecessary delays.

What to Know About the Timeline:

  1. Order completion time:

    • Beyond printing, an order may involve additional steps like finishing or assembly, which require extra time.
  2. Potential delays:

    • Like any production process, unforeseen delays can occur, such as print failures or technical issues.
  3. Realistic expectations:

    • Requesting completion in 1 day for an order that needs 3 days is not feasible. It’s important to allow sufficient time for your order to be completed properly.

What to Tell Us:

  • The deadline or time frame you have for completing the order.
  • Whether you are flexible or have a strict deadline.
  • If you’re unsure about the required time, write “Please suggest.”

Examples:

  • ✔️ “I need the order completed in 5 days.”
  • ✔️ “I’m flexible, but ideally within 10 days.”
  • ✔️ “Please suggest based on the complexity.”
  • ❌ Incorrect response: “I need it tomorrow, no matter what.”

Note:

Completing your order involves printing, inspection, any required processing, and packaging. Ensure you allow enough time for us to deliver the best possible quality.

Providing a realistic timeline helps us deliver your order on time and with top-notch quality! 😊

What Does a Sample Mean?

3D printing is a precision technology, but not perfect. This means the produced parts could have slight variations. If you are planning a large production, ordering samples allows you to ensure the final output meets your expectations.

What You Need to Know:

  • Samples are not free:
    • Their cost is included in the final price.
  • For single prints:
    • If you only need one item, you can skip the sample and simply say “No”.
  • For larger productions:
    • Let us know how many samples you’d like before moving forward with production.

Examples:

  • ✔️ “I need 1 sample for confirmation.”
  • ✔️ “I want 2 samples before starting production.”
  • ✔️ “No, I don’t need a sample.”
  • ❌ Incorrect response: “Do whatever you think is best.”

🛠️ Selecting a sample ensures that the production output meets your expectations! 😊

Do you want additional processing for your part?

3D printing creates objects with visible layers on their surface. If you prefer a smoother or painted finish, additional processing is required. Additionally, if the part will be integrated into a mechanical structure, metal inserts may be necessary for reinforcement.

What You Should Know:

  • Surface finishing:

    • Visible layer lines are a normal feature of 3D printing.
    • Achieving a smooth surface requires sanding and painting, typically performed by professionals with the right tools.
  • Reinforcement for mechanical parts:

    • If the part will endure mechanical stresses or connect to other components, adding metal inserts can improve its strength and durability.

What to Tell Us:

  • Desired processing:
    • Describe if you want the part sanded, painted, or fitted with metal inserts.
    • If you don’t want any additional processing, simply write “No”.

Examples:

  • ✔️ “I want the part painted in black.”
  • ✔️ “I need the surface to be smooth.”
  • ✔️ “Please add metal inserts to the connection points.”
  • ✔️ “No, I don’t need any additional processing.”
  • ❌ Incorrect response: “Do whatever you think is best!”

🛠️ A clear description of your desired processing ensures we deliver the part exactly as you need it! 😊

Do you want the part to be assembled or work with other components?

It’s important to let us know if:

  1. The part is standalone, or
  2. It’s part of a larger construction that interacts with other components.

This will help us determine whether specific tolerances are required to ensure the part fits correctly.

What You Need to Know:

  • Assembly with other components:

    • If the part is part of a larger system, please provide the relevant designs or the components it will interact with.
    • 3D printing doesn’t offer the absolute precision of CNC machining, so we may need to include larger tolerances for proper fitment.
  • Assembly method:

    • Describe whether the assembly will use glue, screws, snap-fit, or another method.

What to Tell Us:

  • If assembly is required:

    • Which components need to be assembled?
    • How will the assembly be performed?
  • If the part is standalone:

    • Simply write “No assembly required.”

Examples:

  • ✔️ “Two parts need to be assembled using glue.”
  • ✔️ “The part must work with other M3 screws. I’ll send the components for testing.”
  • ✔️ “No assembly required, it’s standalone.”
  • ❌ Incorrect answer: “Make it fit with the other stuff!”

🛠️ Providing clear assembly details helps us ensure your part fits and functions perfectly! 😊

Does the part need specific strength requirements?

If the part will be subjected to loads or forces, it’s important to provide detailed information about its strength requirements. This will help us optimize the printing process and select the appropriate materials and settings. If the part doesn’t need to withstand any forces, simply write “No”.

What to describe:

  • The size and nature of the forces:
    • Are they static loads (e.g., supporting weight) or dynamic loads (e.g., vibrations)?
    • What is the maximum weight or force it must withstand (e.g., 50 kg)?
  • The operating environment:
    • Will it be used indoors or outdoors?
    • Are there temperature or other environmental conditions to consider?

Examples:

  • ✔️ “The part must withstand static loads up to 50 kg.”
  • ✔️ “It needs to handle dynamic loads with vibrations.”
  • ✔️ “It won’t experience any forces – it’s decorative.”
  • ❌ Incorrect response: “Just make it strong!”

Note:

If the part is meant to be integrated into a larger structure, let us know about the related components so we can ensure proper force distribution.

⚙️ Providing accurate strength requirements helps us create parts that meet your exact needs! 😊

Size and Dimensions 📏

The dimensions you provide in the order form are one of the most critical pieces of information for the production process. Below, we explain how we use this data and what might happen if the information is incorrect.

How Do We Use Your Dimensions?

  1. Checking fit on the print bed:

    • Based on the dimensions you provide, we check whether the object fits within the print bed of our machines.
    • If the object is larger than the maximum print size, we will need to cut it into smaller pieces to make it printable.
  2. Adjusting dimensions:

    • It’s crucial to provide the correct dimensions.
    • In many cases, products you see in online photos are results of rendering, and their dimensions may not reflect reality.
    • If the dimensions you provide don’t match the actual size of the part, we will scale it up or down accordingly.

💡 Providing accurate dimensions ensures that the final product meets your expectations without delays or additional costs. 😊

Weight ⚖️

The weight you’ve provided in the order form is an important detail that we use in two main scenarios. Below is an explanation of how we process this information and select the appropriate method based on your requirements.

1. Lightweight Components

  • For applications like airplanes, drones, or other parts that must be extremely lightweight, we use specialized material such as LW-PLA.
  • LW-PLA reduces the weight of the object, making it suitable for dynamic applications.

2. Artistic Constructions with Stability

  • For artistic or decorative constructions requiring stability, we may add sand to the interior of the object.
  • Adding sand increases the weight, ensuring the object remains stable.

Why Is Weight Important?

  • You specify the weight requirements and the reason for them.
  • Based on this information, we will choose the appropriate method: either LW-PLA for lightweight components or adding sand for stability.

💡 By providing accurate information about weight, you ensure the final product meets your specifications, whether it’s for lightweight components or stable constructions! 😊
